Getting the scoop on petsCanine Clean-Up has niche with dog-owning families
Business Courier of Cincinnati - by Paula Christian Courier Staff Reporter
Print Email Reprints RSS Feeds Add to Del.icio.us Digg This CommentsIt was only a few years ago that John Edwards was arguing with his fiancee, Robin Pappas, about who would pick up the dog waste in the yard of their Symmes Township home.

It was a dreaded chore, since their two Akitas generated plenty of poop.

"I know I didn't want to do it," Edwards said. "I thought there must be other people like me."

Suddenly, the idea for a rather strange business venture was born.

Three years and more than 100 customers later, Canine Clean-Up is going strong. Each year Pappas, the owner, has doubled the business.

"Our customers are middle- to upper-class people, who don't particularly want to do this chore," said Edwards, who manages the business. "We don't have a lot of attrition, we've only lost a few customers and that's because they've moved ... As the word
gets out, we've gotten more and more customers."

At the time, the couple thought they had discovered a one-of-a-kind idea. But pooper-scooper companies have been popping up across the nation for more than a decade.

There are roughly 300 pooper-scooper companies in the United States and Canada, according to the Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists (APAWS).

About 70 of those U.S. businesses are official members of APAWS, a nonprofit trade group. Their membership has more than doubled since the organization was founded two years ago.

"People have other priorities in their lives now, like their wives and their kids," said APAWS president Michael Zlotnick, who owns a pooper-scooper business in Cheltenham, Pa.

"People leave for work at 7 a.m. and don't get home until 6:30 or 7 at night ... the last thing they want to do is argue with their spouse about who is going to pick it (waste) up. The kids wanted the dog, but they don't want to pick up the poop," Zlotnick said.
"We're just another service for people like exterminators or lawn-care companies."

Edwards and Pappas knew they had a good idea for a business venture based on the "Why didn't I think of that'' response they got from friends and relatives.

Pappas decided to keep her full-time job as a buyer at Procter & Gamble while Edwards, a former insurance company manager, launched Canine Clean-Up.

They started by handing out thousands of fliers advertising their new business in Loveland, Symmes Township and Indian Hill. Their first customer was a lady with two Labrador Retrievers. Pappas was so excited that she videotaped Edwards getting
ready for his first day of work.

It wasn't easy work. Edwards started out using a rake and a hand-grasp pooper scooper. After six months, many sore muscles and a lot of bending over, he knew there had to be a better way.

He now uses a collapsible hand rake and a commercial-sized dust pan with a long handle. He also carries disinfectant, plastic bags and dog biscuits to befriend his "customers.''

He swears that dogs hear his "Pooch Mobile" truck coming down the road, because the dogs are always waiting for him when he arrives. After three years, he's never even come close to a dog bite.

The hours now are long and the work is hard, especially in the summer when the air is hot. He often has to get pretty close to the waste to examine for roundworms, tapeworms, diarrhea or foreign objects that may indicate big problems.

Customers pay $10 to $25 per yard for a weekly visit, depending on the size of the green space and the number of pets. Edwards also has landed contracts with four apartment complexes.

Several landscaping companies also generate business for Edwards because dog waste clogs their equipment. If a customer's yard is filled with waste, they pass along Canine Clean-Up's business card so they can first clean the yard.
